BMW R 1300 GS vs BMW S 1000 XR — Which Bike for the Pyrenees?

January 2026·9 min read·Gear · All Riders

The question we get asked more than any other. Two BMWs, two very different propositions, both perfectly capable of completing any route in the Pyrenees. The R 1300 GS is the default choice of the experienced touring rider. The S 1000 XR is the choice of the rider who wants to go faster, corner harder, and carry less. The right answer depends entirely on what kind of rider you are.

On the Cols — Where the Difference is Felt

On the Tourmalet's upper slopes, both bikes perform flawlessly. The GS climbs with an almost effortless torque that makes the gradient feel manageable — the boxer engine's low-rev character is ideally suited to sustained mountain climbing. The XR climbs harder and faster, the inline-four revving with a sound that carries differently in thin mountain air, the suspension firmer, the feedback from the tarmac more immediate.

On the descent — the long, technical drop toward Luz-Saint-Sauveur, or the cliff-edge traverse between the Soulor and the Aubisque — the XR's sporty character is an asset. The GS inspires confidence in a different way: you know it will absorb whatever the road throws at it.

For Multi-Day Touring — Where Comfort Becomes Strategy

The three-col day is around 160 kilometres and six hours. On the GS, that is a comfortable day. On the XR, it is a good day that becomes demanding toward the end. For multi-day tours with luggage, the GS is the more natural platform — its luggage mounts more integrated, the rack design more practical, and the larger 21.5-litre tank managing the gaps between mountain fuel stations with more margin.

"For the Pyrenees, the GS is the right answer — unless you know you are the rider who will feel constrained by 'right'. In that case, take the XR and enjoy every corner."

The Verdict

First trip, varying terrain, gravel possible: take the R 1300 GS. Experienced Pyrenees rider, tarmac cols only, light luggage, wants to feel the road: take the S 1000 XR. Both bikes available through our rental partners in Pau and Lourdes.
