Best Time to Visit the Pyrenees by Motorcycle

February 2026·8 min read·Planning · All Levels

The Pyrenees are rideable for roughly six months a year. The high passes typically open in late May and close in October or November. The difference between a perfect week in June and a disappointing one in mid-August is significant. The short answer: June and September are the two best months for motorcycle touring in the Pyrenees.

June — The Connoisseur's Month

In the considered opinion of most experienced Pyrenees riders, the best month of the year. The high passes open progressively through June. The days are long, the roads not yet busy, and the vegetation at its most vivid. There is often residual snow visible above 2,200m. Temperatures are warm in the valleys and genuinely cold at altitude — a thermal layer is sensible for summit stops.

July & August — Peak Season, Peak Crowds

All passes open, reliable weather, accommodation plentiful. But the Tourmalet on a Saturday in August is not the solitary experience it can be in June. The Tour de France passes through the Pyrenees in mid-July, closing roads for a day and generating motorcycle traffic for a week either side. If you are riding in high summer, start early — the cols at 7am are a different experience.

"September rides. The roads empty themselves, the light turns gold, and the range looks like it was built for exactly this."

September — The Hidden Gem Month

The month that regulars keep to themselves. The summer crowds have gone, the passes are still open, and the light takes on a quality — lower angle, warmer tone — that makes the landscape look different from its summer self. The Périgord is particularly good in September: quieter markets, easier bookings, the beginning of foie gras season.

Month-by-Month Reference

  • April–May Lower passes opening, unpredictable weather, no crowds
  • June Best overall — all passes open by mid-month, ideal temperatures
  • July Good conditions, Tour de France mid-month, increasing traffic
  • August Peak crowds, reliable weather — ride early
  • September Excellent — empty roads, golden light, Périgord at its best
  • October Gamble on higher passes, lower roads often superb
  • Nov–March High passes closed — not recommended
